An Art in the AM reading prompted by the Ian Friedland piece pictured at the bottom. The artfulness of a marquetry master flows through every decision he makes. He considers and selects specific veneers based on their species, their color, their grain, the way each can be cut. From thin sheets of wood and the use of sharp implements, the artist is able to piece together the picture he has imagined. Depth and pattern are created in juxtaposition, each piece placed and honed to fit exactly so. I imagine he sometimes takes a step back to deal with ragged cuts…

The good stuff is Wawa whole milk flavored with a gentle squeeze of Nestle Quick chocolate syrup. Not Quick powder (too weak) or Hershey syrup (too after-tasty). And while most people are weaned to appreciate 2% milk or – god forbid – skim milk, I crave the punch that can only come from the creamy whole variety. I admit it; I’m addicted. Leave it to the fun-loving Irish to coin a term – flahoolick – for ordinary things that bring extraordinary joy; to notice flahoolick is to live a fulsome life, mindfully capturing details, deeply experiencing moments, allowing for wonder and revelation. Color radiates flahoolick when vividly displayed in dancing tulips, sparking seas, vibrant sunsets, a bowl of fruit, a cozy home, a baby’s eyes. I felt safe. My dad and I were often the last people awake in our house at the end of the day. Dad wanted to catch Johnny Carson’s monologue, and I just loved to cuddle up next to Daddy.
