A reason for writing

closed leather journal with a pen on topWell, hello there! Thanks for stopping by to read my stories.

On this site – which I’ve named The stories of my life – I’m compiling my personal reflections – my vacation blog, my memoir posts, and my current adventures in my new home in Lewes, Delaware.

Why a personal blog? When I started writing my vacation posts way back in 2008, I realized how they helped me to live the moments – to consider how I might eloquently narrate my adventures while they were happening so that I could share them on my blog. Some people take pictures – I remember (and dream!) in words. Words are my art and my chosen form of expression.

I live most of my life inside my own head. My big and little thoughts are only in the cosmic consciousness. I’m selfish enough to wish them heard more – that’s why I write professionally, why I write this for family, friends, and maybe their descendants.

In The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfield wrote –

People disappear when they die. Their voice, their laughter, the warmth of their breath. Their flesh. Eventually their bones. All living memory of them ceases. This is both dreadful and natural. Yet for some there is an exception to annihilation. For in the books they write they continue to exist. We can rediscover them. Their humor, their tone of voice, their moods. Through the written word they can anger you or make you happy. They can comfort you. They can perplex you. They can alter you. All this, even though they are dead. Like flies in amber, like corpses frozen in ice, that which according to the laws of nature should pass away is, by the miracle of ink on paper, preserved.  It is a kind of magic.

Some might find that morbid, but I find it tantalizingly inspiring.

So this is something I leave behind, perhaps not “ink on paper” but a preserved collection of thoughts nontheless. Here is a chronicle of my memories and my ruminations, a record of places I’ve been, adventures I’ve had, and thoughts I’ve thunk. I hope you enjoy them and maybe even treasure them. And if you’re reading this a hundred years hence I hope they give you some sense of acquaintance with one person who lived an ordinary life in days past.

These are the stories of my life, a life I’m trying to live to the fullest and a life I’m hoping will make a small difference in my corner of the world.

Love to all –

PS. My professional life is very full as well – and the thoughts I think in that sphere are captured in my Learning Journal blog. Feel free to check that out as well.

A hundred years hence
Who it is
With such curiosity
Reads my poems
A hundred years hence!
Shall I be able to send you
An iota of joy of this fresh spring morning
The flower that blooms today
The songs that the birds sing
The glow of today’s setting sun
Filled with my feelings of love?
