The good stuff is Wawa whole milk flavored with a gentle squeeze of Nestle Quick chocolate syrup. Not Quick powder (too weak) or Hershey syrup (too after-tasty). And while most people are weaned to appreciate 2% milk or – god forbid – skim milk, I crave the punch that can only come from the creamy whole variety. I admit it; I’m addicted.
My first dealer was my mother, believe it or not. She had Wawa milk delivered to our door three days a week when I was growing up (she supplied six of us). Mostly, she pushed white milk, but chocolate milk was positioned as a “special treat.” My school complicitly made 10-cent cartons of Wawa chocolate milk available at lunch – a formulation almost as good as what I got at home. That dime bag kept me buzzed throughout my afternoon lessons. Further, we took school trips to the Wawa dairies so we would appreciate how carefully they processed and bottled the substance.
During my years living in New England, I made do with lesser brands of milk, and believe-you-me I rejoiced when Wawa started opening stores up there. My friends laughed at what they thought was a weird name for a convenience mart, but I proudly informed them that Wawa made the finest milk in the land, and the name comes from an Indian word meaning “snow goose” (but that’s a detail only an addict would know, isn’t it?).
While I occasionally substitute seasonal varieties – hot chocolate to ward away chill, black-and-white milkshakes in the heat of summer – it’s the good stuff I crave every day. I truly recognize my addiction when I travel – sometimes making multiple stops to find anything resembling the real thing. In fact, if I travel within a day’s distance, I stash my chocolate milk in a cooler so I don’t have to go without.
I do realize that whole milk probably isn’t good for me, and adding chocolate only amplifies the self-indulgence. But everybody has some addiction, right? I excuse myself by having no other (major) vices – I don’t drink alcohol, or smoke, or gamble.
So I still brazenly pour myself two or three fingers of chocolate milk in a glass tumbler every night a few hours before bed. I toss it back with a satisfying smack and with that, all my cares and jitters calm.

Too funny! Our pastor just shared her addiction to ciinnabon this morning during her sermon. She justified it by saying she doesn’t smoke, gamble or have extra marital affairs and this is her one indulgence that for a short time makes everything seem right with the world. I know we all have something, mine is ice cream, be it soft serve or freshly dipped, I can’t resist! So here, here to chocolate milk, a chocolate and vanilla twist, or a decadent cinnamon.! Let’s come out of our closet and proclaim our deadly sin! And on my death bed please bring me one dairy Queen vanilla and chocolate swirl cone or if I happen to be near the boardwalk a kohr brothers! I’ll die with a smile on my face!
This was so cute to read! As I’ve gotten more consistent in my routines, I find myself extra excited to have my treats or comfort foods! I’d come home from work excited to have my hummus and whole grain pita chips; or my glass of oj (with a splash of water to cut the sweetness) with my early morning omelet to start the workday.
The little things make the days just that much sweeter ; )
