    Winding down and gearing up

Another epic vacation is coming to a close… since I’ve already unpacked the car and stocked up the groceries, I guess it’s all over except one more good night’s sleep – this time in my own bed. Let me record the weekend happenings before we call this one a wrap. After drenching rain Friday night, Saturday dawned cloudy and drizzly, but it let up enough for one last long beach walk after another fabulous breakfast. The tide was in, and the waves were comparatively choppy, but the walk still performed its magic so I could leave the Cape with a…

    Washing away the cobwebs

“Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.” ~ Dee Hock Experts say that taking time off allows your mind to process all that you’ve been cramming into it, and to noodle through some of those nagging questions you haven’t had time to ponder. So when I go on vacation, I try to leave plenty of space for good old-fashioned vegging out – and a rainy day is a perfect excuse to do just that. Of course, sunshine is a good excuse for it as well, which the last several days have proved! But for…

    Old haunts and new discoveries

Today’s weather was picture-perfect on Cape Cod, and I definitely had a 5-star day. I had many little adventures to while away the time in delicious R&R. Start: Breakfast. I haven’t yet expounded on the feasts that constitute the “breakfast” part at this Bed & Breakfast. Always, always a treat! This morning’s offerings began with a scrumptious blackberry crumb cake and sliced honeydew melon. That would have served for the entire meal as far as I’m concerned, but the main dish (for me) was a yummy serving of scrambled eggs and toast, which sounds plain, but the eggs were cooked to perfection and I…

    Turning pages

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book!”   ~ Jane Austen On the list of great pleasures in this world, I count walking on the beach and reading as several of the top ones. That’s all I did today. Reading by the pool, and walking on the beach. Some might call that boring; I call it a fabulous vacation day on Cape Cod. My reading spot and scenes around the pool.    “The books that help you most are those which make you think that most. The hardest…

    Playing tourist

I spent today at the far end of the Cape, heading all the way east, then north, then a slight drift northwest to wind up in Provincetown. Let me take you along on my day playing tourist… First stop – the beach!  I wanted to walk on Marconi Beach which was my first view of the National Seashore the first time I came up to the Cape – it’s a sentimental  favorite and on the top of my list based on the merits – a stunning beach. It’s about halfway between the B&B and Provincetown, a good place to start the day –…

    Miles of Metaphors

Back on Cape Cod at last!  It’s been a year and a half and a lifetime since the last time I made the trek to the part of the world that soothes my soul like no place else. I’m looking forward to five days soaking in the magic here. It’s too bad one day is spent driving, although the drive is a nice way to draw a line between there and here and gradually shift my mind to a different place.  Welcome to the Captain Freeman Inn There’s not a lot to do when driving from Delaware to Brewster, so I…
