Artist Statement

I am awed by the beauty and power of language, and I make art with words.

If I were a painter, I’d be a pointillist–demonstrating how small details of varying colors brought close together can craft an impressive big picture. If I were an engineer, I’d be a bridge-builder–connecting what is separated with an elegant arc, helping people to travel over what is difficult to cross. If I were a physician, I’d be a geneticist–studying how people become who they are, what they are at the cellular level. As a writer, I seek to do all those things in lyrical prose.

For decades, my writing has been in service of guiding professional development, aiming to translate research and theory into practical recommendations. My writing is now taking a more personal turn. I am expanding my subject matter and expressing myself more creatively, ever seeking the immersive satisfaction of honing a craft.

I am writing to invite people to relish the joys of walking on an empty beach; to share how my mind leaps from a thought-provoking article to a new commitment for a vibrant life; to bring along virtual companions on my solo vacations; to reveal a piece of myself to friends and family.

I am writing to grapple with controversial ideas, to hold a debate in my head and to invite others into that conversation. It has been important to me to advocate for deep learning and expressive writing that is free of interference from artificial intelligence tools and algorithmic control, to defend the natural environment, and to take a stand for good government.

I am writing to explore the concept of time, how it is perceived, and how it is spent–to think out loud about how I want to spend my moments and days and years. In my imaginings, these accumulated writings will constitute a book that may help others to flourish in a demanding world
