A piece of sky

“It all began the day I learned that from my window I could only see a piece of sky. I stepped outside and looked around. I never dreamed it was so high or even half as wide.” ~ Yentl

Driving home from my Cape Cod vacation, I was really amazed by the sky. It poured rain as I ate my farewell breakfast at the inn, but lightened up long enough to take one last walk on the beach. For old time’s sake, I went to Paine’s Creek Beach. (Nauset was too far in the other direction and under the still-threatening part of the sky.)

Unfortunately, I forgot to change the night-time setting on my camera, so the pictures I took are a bit washed out.

On Saturday afternoon, I headed into Connecticut for a quick visit with the Connecticut Lombardozzi’s – my brother Andy and Kate and Thomas. (Cristina was in a 100-mile bike race in California – which she says she will never do again!)

The skies during my drive were just amazing – I wish I could have taken some pictures. Huge, billowy clouds spot-lit from the top by the sun and every shade of grey underneath. With deep blue sky as the background, the clouds were constantly changing patterns. Because I was driving four to eight lane highways with woods on either side, I could see a huge swath of sky most of the time. It really was breathtaking.

I had a lovely visit at Andy’s house watching part of Kate’s hockey game (they lost, but Kate made a few terrific plays), chatting about school, sports, hobbies, Andy’s new job, and the latest house projects. I didn’t take any pictures because really, would you want your picture taken sweaty from an intense game, tousled from a pre-bed shower, or droopy-eyed on a lazy Sunday morning?  I think not!

The skies on the ride home continued their display of cottony cloud cover. Fall was in the air as the temperature dropped, and it was smooth sailing again with great music and interesting thoughts to keep me company.

As I neared home, the clouds closed up and greyed out, and it began raining (and it was 48 degrees!). My gosh, I hope that isn’t a metaphor for my life!  LOL

No matter – that Yentl song ends this way:

“The more I live, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I realize the less I know. Each step I take, each page I turn, each mile I travel only means the more I have to go. What’s wrong with wanting more? If you can fly, then soar! With all there is, why settle for just a piece of sky?”

After a week of rejuvenating walks in Cape Cod, I’m home and ready to engage in real life. And I’m not settling for just a piece of sky.

This is the life…
