Happy Anniversary!

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the publication of my book, Learning Environments by Design. (Raise a toast!) It marked a significant achievement in my life as a professional and consultant – and as a writer, and I am so very proud of it.

With remarkable timing, David Kelly (former Chairman and CEO of the Learning Guild) asked me to be a guest on his podcast, Tales from the L&D Bookshelf, where we talked about the book and how my thinking has evolved since its publication. For those of you who don’t generally follow my professional stuff – here’s a half hour on some of my more interesting ideas and observations – in case you ever wondered what I have done for a living.

The ideas in Learning Environments by Design were a little ahead of their time. Other prominent thinkers in the L&D industry later published books with their own versions of how to blend various methods of learning into a comprehensive strategy, some likely more popular than mine. In the intervening decade, I have evolved my thinking about blended learning and have presented workshops and conference sessions, written articles, and guided my instructional design graduate students in this way of thinking. As of my last royalty statement, the book has sold 1100 copies. I think I can count myself as a well-known advocate of modern blended learning. There is more evolution on the horizon, I know, although I’m not going to be the one to expand this framework further (hello, retirement!).

I threw a book launch party when the book came out, and – in what many thought was a weird twist – I invited those who came to sign a copy of the book as a remembrance. I still have that signed book prominently displayed on my bookshelf, and I thank you all for your support – then, and now.

As you have seen, I still love writing, although my writing energies these days have moved in a different direction. I hope there is another book in my future, one more personal in nature. I will always, always be an advocate for deep learning, and will always, always, see myself as an avid learner who takes advantage of all the resources and strategies at our disposal. And always, always, books are my favorite source. And it would seem always, always – writing is my creative outlet of choice.

Thanks for reading!
