Ode to Brewster by the Sea

“I need a place where I can hide,
Where no one sees my life inside,
Where I can make my plans, and write them down
So I can read them.

A place where I can bid my heart be still
And it will mind me.
A place where I can go when I am lost,
And there I’ll find me.

I need a place to spend the day,
Where no one says to go or stay,
Where I can take my pen and draw
The girl I mean to be.”

                             – Lyrics from The Secret Garden

Brewster by the Sea in early Spring  The place where I can go… Brewster by the Sea

I love Brewster by the Sea.  I’ve told you all about the joys of the Cape, but I haven’t said enough about how special it is to stay at Brewster by the Sea…

It really is quite the loveliest place.  Donna and Byron are terrific innkeepers and they have many subtle special touches, like the rose on my nightstand and the chocolate next to my pillow each night.  Every afternoon, Donna puts out an “afternoon repast” – homemade treats like oatmeal cookies, banana bread, and great ginger cookies.  The back garden is terrific, and they have a nice pool and gazebo (the pool isn’t open yet, of course, and the gazebo is new and is still being installed).  Even though it’s incomplete this time of year, the garden is still a great place to find a spot in the shade to hang out.

When I was hanging out Monday afternoon, I made friends with Harrison, Donna and Byron’s Labradoodle puppy.  He loped over and decided to hang out with me for a few minutes.  He’s got quite the personality and is cute as the dickens.  That’s saying a lot – you know how much I love dogs (not really).  I know he’ll become part of the inn’s special ambiance.

I couldn’t ask for a more comfortable suite of rooms… a great, soft, comfy bed with a lace canopy and a quilted bedcover… an overstuffed loveseat with a view to Drummer Boy Park… plenty of space and plenty of quiet.  In the mornings, I can hear the other guests arriving for breakfast because there’s an overlook from the back corner of my room to the common room (closed off with doors when I want privacy).  It kind-of reminds me of staying in the attic room at Grandmom’s house at the shore when we were kids and hearing all the adults downstairs talking and laughing without actually hearing what they were saying.  Comforting.

And breakfasts… well, they’re one of the reasons I’ve had late lunches and sometimes needed no dinner!  They always start with a fruit course… bananas in chocolate sauce is my favorite, but I love the fresh pineapple and “fruitini” (cantaloupe, melon, and blackberries) whenever they are served as well.  Another treat is homemade bread or English muffins with special recipe raspberry jam.  Herbed eggs, baked eggs with cheese, french toast, pancakes, and the yummiest waffles – whatever the main course, it’s always fabulous.

Thank you, Donna and Byron!!

I highly recommend Brewster by the Sea!  A perfect escape when you really need “a place to hide.”
