You know how when you go away, after a week or so, you are actually glad to go back home? You start to miss your own bed and your day-to-day life.
Nope. I could have stayed on the Cape LOTS longer…
In fact, after a last sumptuous breakfast, I dawdled for hours on the Cape and walked first in the fog at Paine’s Creek Beach, then on the Rail Trail, before finally heading out at 12:30. I took the scenic route out 6A to the Bourne Bridge and didn’t get off-Cape until after 1:30… btw – it’s a tribute to my love for Cape Cod that I actually drive the Bourne Bridge – it feels like you’re taking off in a plane, and is so high up that this afraid-of-heights driver has to grip the wheel and stare straight ahead. Yikes!!
Sunday morning fog at Paine’s Creek…

Last almost-fall walk on the Rail Trail…

In case you’re wondering, I did keep up my tradition of collecting a stone every time I took a walk. I brought home 11 souvenirs that I hope contain a little Cape magic for the interim before I return again.
Luckily, the trip-home soundtrack gave me lots of encouragement… From Leonard Bernstein’s New York, I heard Audra McDonald singing “I’m a little bit in love” (with the Cape). To speed me on my way, the Go-Gos chimed in with “we got the beat” (from one of my 80s compilations). I was urged to “try defying gravity” when the Wicked soundtrack came on, while Carole King reminded me “my life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue.” On the Jersey turnpike, Michael Crawford advised me to “listen to the music of the night.” And just before I got home, Barry Manilow lamented “I hate to see October go.”
I hate to see my Cape Cod vacation go.
This is the life…
