True story…
On the night my Daddy died, my doorbell rang for no apparent reason. I had spent the entire day in the hospital and had come home to get some rest and take care of a bit of Christmas business. I thought I’d head back to the hospital again early in the morning.
But while I was getting ready for bed, the doorbell rang. I have a funky doorbell that doesn’t ring very well or very strongly. It’s one of those chimes that is supposed to have 5 or 6 notes in it. But I only get one or two anemic chimes if I’m lucky; most of the time, I actually have to listen for the click because there is no chime. But that night, I got one or two sound notes in the wee hours of the morning. No one was at the door. I told Andy that if our Dad just died, I was going to freak out. Within about an hour, we got the call that Dad had indeed passed away.
There’s an old saying made famous by the Christmas film, It’s a Wonderful Life. “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” That bell in the early hours of Christmas Eve morning was just my Dad’s way of saying farewell. My, how I miss him still.
But I know he has his wings.
